Product Description

The Nomad Ball-Head, can also function as a gimbal head just like the GP Ball-Head.  But unlike the GP, the Nomad Ball-Head will require a leveling base for stitched panoramic images. The Nomad Ball-Head takes advantage of our latest manufacturing technology to bring you an unprecedented value in a professional tripod head.

All Acratech Ball-Heads are designed to be lightweight and rugged for the active outdoor photographer. The open structure lets moisture, dirt and debris fall through instead of being trapped inside a socket.

Available only with our Arca Swiss style, knob quick release clamp. The locking lever is not available on the Nomad Ball-Head.

Camera quick release plates sold separately.

Acratech Nomad Ballhead (02:37)
The Acratech Nomad Ballhead is a light weight, rugged ballhead designed for the active photographer. It functions like a traditional ball head but has an added feature that other brands do not and that is our patented pin in the bottom of the ball. When dropped into to portrait position, this pin creates a pivot action. We recommend it for lenses with collars up to 40mm All of our products are made in the USA!

  1. Precision and high quality 5 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Jan 2018

This ballhead is very precisely machined. Everything moves smoothly without any looseness. The locking knob and friction knob have a positive feel. The locking knobs on many ballheads have a mushy feel. This is not the case with the Acratech. With the Acratech you know that the ball is securely clamped.

  2. 5 stars vs Other Heads... but 4 Star Review

Posted by on 17th Nov 2017

First, I feel bad knocking a star off the rating because even with the few little "flaws", this head is still better than 95% of all of the competition.

It's LIGHT, versatile, stable, easy-to-adjust and use. Haven't had it long enough to decide how durable is, but if it's anything like my Acratech GP-s, it will last my lifetime (and then probably some more). Shipping was super fast and accurate.

So what is wrong with the Nomad?

Just a few really *tiny* things:

    1. The clamp is not indexed - so if you want to drop a nodal rail on it for a panorama you'll have to make your own mark. I made one with a silver permanent marker, but I'd prefer etched markings.

    2. There is a bubble level on the clamp. But I would like to have one on the base. Since this head is not designed like the Acratech GP-s so that you can invert the ball head and use the base as a "panning clamp", it's important to get the base level - or add a panning clamp. BTW... there appear to be two places where a bubble level can go on the clamp, an outside one, and one inside the clamp. The one inside is just an empty hole... Or perhaps you'd call it a weight reduction feature.

Anyway, tiny things that may make no difference to folks who aren't planning to do panoramas with it.

Everything else about is is superb.

  3. perfect for now 5 Star Review

I just received this head. It arrived fast and in perfect state in Belgium. It looks perfect, smartly designed and light, as explained on the videos. I didn't use it yet on a real shooting, but I don't see how it could go wrong.Combine it with a quick release plate adapted to your camera, for shooting vertically.

  4. Well manufactured and very sturdy 5 Star Review

Posted by on 5th Dec 2016

I am really pleased with the Nomad ballhead. Easy to adjust and very user friendly. The only problem was that it is a far better piece of kit than my tripod, so I have bought a Gitzo 3 series to keep it and the D810 happy and rock solid.
Many thanks to you Acratech guys for developing this fine product.
